TVR Interior

The interior  proposal for my TVR personal project. I started with three different directions but this was the one that I selected for further development. The main idea was to keep a very simple and functional ambient whilst maximizing space.

More to come...

BMW doodles

Trying to sketch to different directions for a BMW SUV.  Similarly to what Ford did with the Bronco. Nothing really deep, just enjoying the day's creative flow.

Scania

© Juan Méndez

Just wanted to try something different and specially experience the difference on how reflections work on a truck. Quite similar actually. However, there are definitely a few nuances, specially due to the front end shape and some others related with the overall height.
It is not the first lorry I have worked on, I have previously made one or two, but this is the first time I use this rendering style. Still need more practice tho. There are some things that, during the process, I wasn't comfortable with and that made me spend more time than expected.
Anyway, what do you think?

Dodge sketch

© Juan Méndez

A sketch from a quick exploration I made for a Dodge SUV. I took some elements (and it is quite obvious) from those beautiful and powerful designs from the 90's, trying to give it a muscular and nostalgic appearance. This sketch was actually the one I used for the tutorial that you can find by clicking here or by clicking on the image.

TVR

"From the discarded iterations." As always, when working on a personal project, I have the freedom of making as many doodles and sketches for the exploratory phase, as I want to (or time allows me). For my TVR suv I made several, trying to find a nice balance between the brand character, the package I chose and, of course, a fresh look. The proposal above, was closer to a crossover configuration and, although it stylishly contains the brand's expression and unpredictable features, its character was very close to the older models. That is mainly the reason why I didn't consider this design iteration to be developed into a deeper level. However, it is always fun to make quick renderings of some of this doodles, so I'll be probably posting more of them soon.

Yes, the chameleon paint is a must.

What do you think? If you have any comments, please feel free to share them here.

best,

Juan

saludos,

Juan

Aston Martin (Mendezign Studio)

© Juan Méndez
Aston Martin is definitely one of my favourite car brands, so I have made several sketches, for personal full projects, like the one that is posted in this blog dated December 2021, and also just for fun independent doodles...

Symmetrical views are not something common in my sketchbook, since one has to be careful to keep precisely that symmetry between the two sides. Of course, drawing them with SBP or a silmilar tool, would simplify things. However, I like the idea of knowing that I'm capable of doing it without them and force my self to practice it as much as I can.

For the sketch above I wasn't looking for something very complex. Just trying to keep the character of the brand whilst trying to find something original for the diffuser area.

What do you think? Do you like working on this kind of views?

Greetings!

Juan

Mercedes

© Juan Méndez

Probably not a very conspicuous design for a Mercedes. I was just doodling away, practicing different perspectives, there's a render that came from these though (you can find it on last year collection). Using prismacolor over black paper gives them an original touch. However, one must be very careful to gradually add light, otherwise, the sketch becomes quite flat. The trick is to draw the full view with a very low oppacity and, when everything is correctly placed, start to add more and more color so the hardest traces are left for the brightest areas only.
I can teach you this and other techniques online,,, take a look at the "lessons" tab if you are interested.
Greetings!
Juan

Nissan sketches

© Juan Méndez
Just a pair of sketches of what could be a Nissan SUV. Mainly focusing on the front end character and the general proportion. Trying also to enjoy the moment of inspiration and let the creativity flow... I'll post a time-lapse video of the rendering process on YouTube later and by later I mean in a few months. Stay tuned. Cheers!

Porsche #cdmporsche911challenge

© Juan Méndez

Just having fun with another view of the Porsche for the #cdmporsche911challenge A relativly quick sketch, done while watching the Canadian GP.

Usually, this kind of views don't attract to much attention due to their small footprint. Nonetheless, it is a view that I enjoy rendering, because one can show the flow of the highlights through the side surfaces...

Porsche #cdmporsche911challenge

My entry for the Car Design Magazines Instagram design challenge.

I found some inspiration in the old 550. Something I really like about that car, is its simplicity. So for my proposal I wanted to keep a similar direction.

It is curious how nowadays manufacturing processes, have become more complex. It is possible to produce all kinds of shapes. However, I'm not sure if that has really helped to improve car's appearance. Suddenly it appears as if there was some kind of yearning or craving, among companies (not all of them of course) for creating the most intricated surfaces and volumes possible. Is that really necessary? From my point of view, most of the times, it has not been a very succesful enterprise, at least in terms of aesthetics. Several examples come to my mind, I'm not gonna mention any though...

What do you think? Do you agree?

So that's why I decided to make something very neat for this occasion.

As usual, this sketch was made just for fun. I commonly doodle a few views to later pick one and render it, so this was the "winner", the selected one. Hopefully I'll work on a second one and post it here later.

Thanks in advance for your kind comments!

I'll also take the chance to thank my friend Marcin Wasilewsky from Car Design Pro.

Ferrari sketch

© Juan Méndez

This particular sketch was made originally by a friend of mine; Jesús Herrera. Actually most of the lines and volumes are exactly the same. I just made this overlay in order to clean the original and use it to create a Photoshop rendering tutorial.
Something that I would like to highlight about his design is the stance, the volumes and its very beautiful flowing lines. The concept also looks quite contemporary...
Anyway, the final render can be found in this blog, March 2022 posts.
The Photoshop rendering tutorial is available HERE or you can clic on the image above.
From now on, I'll be trying to add some notes to each sketch I post here. Perhaps, a few thoughts about the inspiration behind, the purpose or the process,,, I'm not really sure. However, my main objective is just to share with you a little more about what I do.
If you want to share any thoughts or if you have any particular questions, please feel free to leave a comment.
Bests!
Juan
