A.I. vs N.I.

I came across the image above recently. To be honest, I have not read the full article. But It is not necessary, because in that little piece, it is found a reflection that coincides with my way of thinking and which, since A.I. appeared, popped into my head and has permanently lingered. And I'd like to share it here with you.
Of course A.I. is used for many different tasks and by many different people (in terms of profession). However, I speak from my perspective as a designer and teacher.
When I was a child (and it is a common experience for many), I developed a passion for cars and drawing. That passion lead and inspired me to sketch a lot. Cars, cartoons, comic characters, animals, etc. At the beginning (as usual) without much success. Nevertheless, the satisfaction ensued from performing the activity and the small or large progress that accompanied every sketch, made me keep going.
With practice for sure, it has become easier to a certain extent. Nowadays, I continue making mistakes or sometimes, the sketches or illustrations can result in a total failure. However, I continue learning and making some little progress, which again, results in a feeling of satisfaction and pride. Probably, the same feeling that, when finishing a sketch, made us as kids, show them to our moms and ask her to paste it on the fridge.

Today many people proudly ask an A.I. to do the job for them and then run into social media to post the magnificent imagery done, not by them but by the "machine" justifying themselves by saying: It made my render from what I intelligently wrote on the prompt or from a sketch that I made (which usually sucks, so it's made with 5% of their "talent" and 95% A.I.). Where's the fun in that? What are they proud of?
Instead of giving A.I. the tasks that we don't like to do, to invest time on the things that we actually love to do, we're doing everything backwards. What's next? Ask the A.I. to fulfill our goals, to accomplish our objectives for us, to dream for us?
Sadly (and that is my personal opinion), many companies and studios (not all of them) are implementing the use of A.I. to increase the designer's "production". Why is that necessary, if we as humans have always been fully capable of solving problems, producing what is necessary, create on or own, think on our own?
Or maybe we are just lazy.
What will become of us if from now on we only delegate tasks (specially those that we used to enjoy)?
Gradually the current human being is turning himself into a generation of useless and inept people.

A.I. is a tool, a useful tool, but use it wisely.
Think about it. When using A.I. at least ask yourself. Am I rejecting my own being, my own essence, my own talents and abilities?

Food for thought

Just wanted to share an idea that came to my mind recently (mainly detonated by the image above). Many people (in my country) tend to choose their university or college, focusing mainly on factors that are quite irrelevant, from my point of view. Let's mention for instance, the size of the campus, their supposed "prestige", the facilities and of course the price, as if these things would for sure grant them a secure a dream job spot at the end of the studies.

Throughout my career (and maybe a little late), I came to the conclusion, that (for the worldly success that everyone is chasing), it doesn't matter at all where do you study.

If right now you're about to start a bachelor or any other level or kind of study, I highly recommend you to review 2 factors. First, try to find out who your teachers are gonna be. Try to find out everything about their professional career. What will they be teaching you, and consider also former students opinions.

And second (and this only depends on you and no one else), ask yourself some basic questions. Do you have the discipline, the professionalism and most important, the passion to enroll that career?

A successful career can be achieved by anyone with this characteristics, no matter the place, how expensive or cheap it is, or how beautiful their furniture is.

If you came to this blog, because you like automotive design, you must know the man in the photo. So, It is not necessary to talk about all his exploits.

As I mentioned at the beginning, all this soliloquy came to my mind, because probably many people would expect Giugiaro, to be seated at a very fancy table on very fancy chair (and I'm pretty sure he has one). However, those things are far from having any importance. What matters here is the value of the person himself, and his work that is represented by some blueprints, sketches and work instruments on the table (a table that, btw, one can buy at any supermarket).

So, evaluate yourself. What is your real value? Are you really decided to go in pursuit of your "dream job" and prepare yourself with effort, or are you gonna be one of those students that practice and/or study mediocrely once a week or whenever you feel like it. Or maybe blame the lack of a fancy desk, tools, books...?

Follow your dream whatever it may be and never give up!

Juan

If you read this note I'd be of course glad to know your opinion. There's a button for commenting below. (You can use English, Spanish, even German if you prefer).
